The Finnish economy has been affected by the global economic downturn, with a contraction of 0.5% expected for 2009. Nevertheless the freight services infrastructure is being radically overhauled to prepare for future growth, with significant development plans underway at both Finland’s main ports.

Although exports of specialised steel products, mining equipment and container handling machinery are still relatively strong in Finland, the paper industry is experiencing difficulties. Facing  a double whammy of slowing consumer demand and overproduction in the paper manufacturing industry in general, the paper industry is struggling. Timber and plywood exports are also being hit heavily because of the sharp slowdown in construction. As the timber industry accounts for over 15% of Finland’s total export revenues, any downturn here is having a big impact on the volume of freight forwarding from Finland.

This notwithstanding, it is a time of radical change in the international freight transport infrastructure for Finland, with 2009 seeing the opening of the new Vuosaari port in Helsinki, following twenty years of planning and development. This is actually a first in the history of the European freight services industry as it is the first time a European capital port has relocated since the advent of containerisation. Vuosaari is now the new port for Helsinki and every shipping company and freight company is keeping a keen eye on developments there.

Two main cargo handling areas in the old port have been closed down and the freight services transferred to the new port. The development of the new port has been a major project, with its total cost put at over one billion euros. The move has involved massive investment on the part of the shipping companies, with Finnsteve alone contributing more than 100,000 euros.  Finnsteve is also introducing greater competition in the lo-lo container sector where there are now three container stevedores. It is projected that the 150 acre site at Vuosaari will have a capacity of 2M TEU a year. This is roughly four times the capacity of the existing port and this scale of growth will clearly revolutionise freight transport in the area.

There are also now widespan gantry cranes at the port of Vuosaari. They are oversized as the access fairway to the port is only 12.5 metres deep.

Vuosaari has been designed as a fast gateway port, with low container dwell times, limited on-site empty stacking and a fast, paperless gate.

The site also includes a 35 acre logistics park that will eventually be home to over 130,000 square metres of warehousing. Nurminen Logistics has been amongst the first to take up a 11 acre concession and establish two drive-through warehouses and a covered rail terminal, which will significantly improve the efficiency of freight forwarding.

The Vuosaari suburb is also growing rapidly, with a population of 30,000 set to grow to 45,000 in the short term and there has therefore been considerable effort put into  establishing a pleasant environment around the port. This has included constructing a 11 metre high, 1.5km long wall around the whole port area to hide it away as much as possible. There have also been lighting towers built so that lighting associated with the freight services is deflected away from residential areas, as well as a 1.5km tunnel to separate  freight forwarding traffic from residential and other local traffic.

There has also been a 13.5km rail tunnel constructed, mainly with the objective of helping to avoid traffic congestion, Initially 10 trains a day are scheduled but this will soon double.

So, with all this focused activity and planning for expansion, Vuosaari is set to take the port of Helsinki to a new level and establish a new era of freight forwarding for shipping companies in Finland.

Vuosaari is not however Finland’s largest container port. That is Kotka, which is flourishing as a result of the growth in Russian transit demand. The two ports have somewhat different profiles. Kotka handles a good balance of exports and imports, whereas the international freight traffic at Helsinki’s port is strongly import-led.

Kotka has also recently completed a 150 hectare development for a new logistics site and is planning a major expansion project that would see capacity increased to 2.5M TEU a year by 2025. The  port is buying adjacent land and studying the development at Vuosaari closely with a view to learning from the Vuosaari freight forwarders experience.

So with its two main ports undergoing significant redevelopment, Finland is all set for a bright future at the forefront of the freight services sector.

Early in our country’s history and stock market history, Boston was the original financial center of America. Even though business was conducted in Boston, it was not considered an official place to conduct such financial business which is part of the stock market history.It wasn’t until 1792 that the United States of America would official organize a formal stock and bond trading in the stock market history which was located in New York. The new banks that were forming attracted wealthy businessmen, who would sell lottery tickets, bonds and shares of stocks along with their ordinary trade. During this time, treasury bonds issued by the new Bank of the United States were the hottest commodity for trading and speculating.

According to stock market history, the first organized stock exchange was created in 1792. Benjamin Jay, John Sutton and 22 additional financial leaders met and agreed to sign an agreement that outlined the rules, regulations and fees for the stock exchange. The original Wall Street was built in 1644 on the lower end of Manhattan by the Dutch to protect themselves against attacks from the British. The wall was later destroyed but the road that ran along side it remained. This is how the term Wall Street was first conceived.

Stock market history includes the establishment of the Stock Exchange Office. The Stock Exchange Office was used to auction securities every day to be sold to the highest bidder. The seller of the securities paid the exchange a commission on each stock or bond sold. Stock market history shows that the Stock Exchange was an exclusive organization that only the elite of New York’s financial community could join.

It wasn’t until 1817 that the name of the Stock Exchange was officially changed to the New York Stock and Exchange Board. Then in 1863, the New York Stock and Exchange Board decided to change its name to the New York Stock Exchange. In stock market history, it was during 1863 that the New York Stock Exchange moved into the building at the corner of Wall and Broad streets to conduct business. This is the location that the New York Stock Exchange still conducts business today.

During the early years of the stock market history, there were a few smaller exchanges that competed with the New York Stock Exchange. One of these smaller exchanges was known as the Curbstone Brokers because they would conduct business outside on the curb come rain or shine. The Curbstone Brokers would deal in smaller companies that couldn’t meet the requirements that had been set by the New York Stock Exchange. It wasn’t until after the Curbstone Brokers had been in business for over 100 years that they purchased a lot at the west end of Wall Street known as Trinity Place. In 1919, the Curbstone Brokers built a tall modern building at 86 Trinity Place. Ten years later the Curbstone Brokers renamed themselves the New York Curb Exchange and moved into their brand new building. Stock market history shows that in 1953 the New York Curb Exchange changed its name to the American Stock Exchange.

Stock market history shows there were only 295 corporations in 1800 in the exchange which about 20 traded publicly. By 1835, there were approximately 121 being traded publicly many of those were railroads. In 1869, there were 145 companies listed, including insurance, steel, farm equipment, tobacco, and other manufacturers. In 1900, U.S. Steel was the biggest stock being traded. Stock market history shows that AT&T, Westinghouse, Eastman Kodak, Procter and Gamble, Pillsbury, Sears, Kellogg, and Nabisco Crackers were also on the New York Stock Exchange during this time period.

The market was roaring during this time. Stock market history shows that a good Wall Street “runner” (someone who delivered paperwork and stock certificates between brokerages) could make $8.00 per day which was an incredible sum considering the prevailing wage at the time was 10 cents or less per hour.

The recent stock market crisis (2008) took the stock market down by more than 30% in less than a year. This has a lot of traders thinking that big money can be made simply by buying put options on stocks that will move down with the market, especially high beta ones. Nothing can be further from the truth. Most amateur options traders who did that either failed to make any money, make very little money or outright lose money even though the stock moved down a lot as predicted. Why is that so?Volatile market conditions are especially bad for buying stock options due to 2 reasons. Firstly, the extreme volatility resulted in extremely high implied volatility which increases the extrinsic value of options dramatically, depressing its profitability. Secondly, extreme volatility leads to extreme speculation which encourages market makers to open up the bid ask spread to an unreasonably wide level in order to fill their own pockets.

Extrinsic value is the price one pays to the seller of stock options in order to justify the risk undertaken by the seller for giving such a right to the buyer. This price is arrived at in theory by options pricing models such as the Black-Scholes model. Extrinsic value directly affects the profitability of the options as the higher the extrinsic value of an option, the more the underlying stock needs to move in order to breakeven or profit. For example, if two options based on the same underlying stock, the same strike price and expiration month have different extrinsic values (of course this cannot be the case in reality), the option with the higher extrinsic value will make lesser money in profit than the option with the lower extrinsic value when the underlying stock moves by the same amount when held to expiration.

Extrinsic value is affected mainly by the level of implied volatility of the underlying stock. If the underlying stock is expected to make big moves, implied volatility goes up and the extrinsic values of its options go up as well. In times of extreme market volatility, extrinsic values go up dramatically across the board, depressing the profitability of options. In fact, one could end up losing more money than usual if the stock does not move according to expectations due to the higher extrinsic value paid. This is why a lot of amateur options traders who simply bought put options recently failed to make much money or any at all. This situation is made even worse by the wide bid ask spreads provided by the market makers.

Market makers are whom options traders really trade options with. When you buy an option, you are really buying directly from market makers who hold an inventory of those options and when you sell options, you are really selling back to these market makers who want to maintain an inventory of those options. Market makers buy and sell options in the exchange, ensuring the liquidity of all options contracts and profit primarily from the bid ask spread that they provide, buying at the bid and selling at the ask. They function exactly like used car dealers, buying at lower prices and selling at higher prices. Typically, the more actively traded the options are, the closer the bid ask spread tend to be due to competition between market makers, however, in times of extreme volatility where there are a lot more buying and selling on panic and more than enough business to go around for all market makers, they usually open up the bid ask spread in order to make even more profits. That is why we saw unusually wide bid ask spreads in this recent crisis. Wider bid ask spreads result in larger upfront losses which again depress the already depressed profitability of stock options due to the higher extrinsic values.

The higher extrinsic value and wider bid ask spread makes profiting from simple stock options buying extremely difficult and are the main reasons why amateur options traders fail to make money buying put options during the recent stock market crisis. Conversely, writing options are an extremely profitable way to trade options during a volatile market where extrinsic values are high.
